Engelberg
Thursday 2 April 1992

Weather

Fine, warm afternoon.

Conditions

Lots of fresh snow over previous few days, but slushy at lower elevations. Run to village very worn.

Overall

Engelberg provided a wonderful location for a meeting. In the heart of the very pretty town, the hotel itself was in easy walking distance of shops and restaurants and the ski slopes.

The meeting ended at midday and there was a rush to get out onto the slopes immediately after lunch.

A pretty varied group including Pete Smith, Walter Stahlecker, Roy McKean, James de Raeve, Richard Straub and various others were spread across the mountain.

The magnificent view down the valley from Engelberg

There had been a large amount of snow over the previous few days, but the grooming machines had been at work, so there was plenty of varied skiing.

The sun was shining and visibility was excellent.

The day was not without its excitement.

Walter Stahlecker lead a group of us down an ungroomed slope that had been kicked up into soft bumps. Roy McKean and I found this somewhat challenging and spent a lot of time in the snow with skis in the air!

Dan Chamby of Fujitsu badly sprained an ankle.

We stopped for a beer on the way down to the village at the end of the day. I fell hard and tore a stomach muscle very near to the bottom -- it gave me problems for about 3 months!
